SAN FRANCISCO — Every September, the Sun-Reporter fills Third Baptist Church to honor the Black men who are changing the Bay Area. This year’s Black Men: Celebrating Change Makers gathering brought a congressional nominee from Dallas, the sitting mayor of San Francisco and the man who once ran both the city and the California Assembly to the same pulpit. Here is a minute of it.
In the clip: the Rev. Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III, senior pastor of Friendship-West Baptist Church and the Democratic nominee for Texas’ 30th Congressional District, a race the Sun-Reporter covered when he won the nomination; Mayor Daniel Lurie; and Willie L. Brown Jr., former mayor of San Francisco and former Speaker of the California State Assembly.
They were three voices in a room full of them. The men honored this year, from pastors and judges to business owners, public servants and athletes, are all in the paper’s Black Men: Celebrating Change Makers special edition. The full video of the evening, with every honoree, is coming soon.
Black Men: Celebrating Change Makers is an annual Sun-Reporter event, held this year at Third Baptist Church of San Francisco, 1399 McAllister St.
