DALLAS — Rev. Frederick Douglas Haynes III has spent years speaking from a pulpit at Friendship-West Baptist Church, delivering sermons on justice, dignity and opportunity. On Tuesday night, the longtime Dallas pastor stepped into a different arena — politics — after winning the Democratic primary for Texas’ 30th Congressional District.
CBS News projected Haynes as the winner, putting the prominent North Texas faith leader on a clear path toward Congress in a district that has been comfortably Democratic for decades.
Haynes leads Friendship-West Baptist Church, one of the largest Black congregations in the region, with more than 13,000 members. Over the years he has built a reputation as a voice for civil rights, voting access and economic fairness, often taking those messages beyond the church walls and into the wider Dallas community.
Texas’ 30th Congressional District stretches across much of southern Dallas and nearby neighborhoods, an area where Democratic candidates typically win by wide margins. Political analysts rate the district at D+25, meaning it votes about 25 percentage points more Democratic than the national average.
The seat was previously held by Rep. Jasmine Crockett, who vacated the position to run for the U.S. Senate in 2026, opening the door for a new representative.
Haynes entered the race as a familiar figure across the district — a pastor with decades of community ties and a history of speaking out on issues affecting working families and underserved neighborhoods.
If November follows the district’s usual voting pattern, Haynes will head to Washington carrying that same message. He has said his priorities include expanding economic opportunity, protecting voting rights and pushing for reforms in the criminal justice system.
For now, the pastor who has spent years calling for change from the pulpit stands one election away from taking that message to Capitol Hill.
