SAN FRANCISCO — She walked into the Sun-Reporter as a San Jose State intern in 1979. She never really left.
ABC7 News profiled Dr. Amelia Ashley-Ward for Black History Month in 2021, and the station put it plainly: Black history happening now. The piece follows her path from intern to reporter and photojournalist, to managing editor in 1984, to publisher in 1994, the year Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett stepped down. After Goodlett’s death she bought the company, and she has run San Francisco’s oldest Black newspaper ever since.
In the interview she talks about what the Black press is for, and about the paper’s long habit of lifting up Black women before the rest of the country caught on, Kamala Harris among them.
It’s decades of work in a few minutes. Worth the watch.
