The Sun-Reporter has told the story of Black San Francisco since 1944. We welcome writers of every background who want to report on these communities with care, curiosity and respect. What we ask is that your story serve the people this paper was built for.

What we look for

  • Reported stories about the Bay Area’s Black communities — politics, housing, schools, health, business, faith, sports, the arts.
  • Community Voice pieces: first-person essays, tributes and opinion from people who live the story.
  • Neighborhood news the big papers don’t cover — Bayview, the Fillmore, Western Addition, Oakland, Richmond, East Palo Alto and beyond.

Our test for every pitch is simple: does it serve our readers? Not who wrote it.

How to pitch

Email sunreporter@sbcglobal.net with “Pitch” in the subject line. Tell us in a few sentences what the story is, why it matters now, and who you’d talk to. If you’ve published before, include two links. We read everything and answer what we can.

Published work follows our Editorial Ethics & Corrections Policy. Submitting a piece does not guarantee publication; editing is part of the process, and we’ll work with you on it.

A Community Journalist program with contributor profiles and more is coming. Pitch now and you’ll be the first to hear.
