SAN FRANCISCO – Mayor Daniel Lurie today appointed longtime gun safety advocate Mattie Scott to the San Francisco Police Commission and swore in new commissioner Wilson Leung, who was approved unanimously by the Board of Supervisors earlier this week. A longtime public safety champion who lost her youngest son to gun violence, Scott is a national leader in advocating for gun safety and support for victims of gun violence. Leung’s approval follows his appointment by Mayor Lurie earlier this month.

“While there is a long way to go, San Franciscans know we are on the right track to making our city safer. Today, we recognize two people who will draw on decades of public safety experience to help us write this next chapter,” said Mayor Lurie. “Wilson Leung is extremely qualified for this role, with 14 years as a federal prosecutor and private sector experience that he will draw on to help our police department keep people safe. Mattie Scott has dedicated her life to keeping our communities safe and preventing gun violence in San Francisco and across the country, I am proud to appoint her today to join the Police Commission.”

“I’m grateful for this opportunity and eager to work for our city’s future. Together, we’ll make it safer and heal our communities,” said Scott. “This is a city that gets things done, and united, we can overcome our challenges like fentanyl and street violence, paving the way for a brighter tomorrow. We will stop the killing and start the healing.”

“I am eager to do my part to help the San Francisco Police Department succeed in its mission to protect and serve all of San Francisco’s communities,” said Leung.

“In November, San Franciscans voted for change, and in his first two appointments to our Police Commission, Mayor Lurie has delivered,” said Board President Rafael Mandelman. “Wilson Leung brings more than 14 years’ experience as a federal prosecutor; Mattie Scott is a gun safety legend. They will be great commissioners and together will help advance the department’s ongoing reform efforts while also working to ensure safety for all our neighborhoods.”

“Wilson Leung and Mattie Scott are stellar appointments to our Police Commission, and San Franciscans will be well served by the decades of experience both will bring to their roles,” said District 6 Supervisor Matt Dorsey. “I’ve known Mattie for years for her work on violence prevention and as an advocate for sensible gun policies, and Wilson’s background as a federal prosecutor will prepare him well for the public safety and short-staffing challenges facing SFPD. Kudos to Mayor Lurie on these great picks.”

“Mayor Lurie has made two exceptional choices for the Police Commission,” said District 2 Supervisor Stephen Sherrill. “Wilson Leung’s deep legal expertise and commitment to public safety will be invaluable, and Mattie Scott’s decades of advocacy for victims and families bring a critical, compassionate voice to the table. Mattie’s appointment is monumental — someone who has fought tirelessly for safer communities now has a seat at the table shaping the future of policing in San Francisco. I’m grateful to the mayor for prioritizing leaders with both the conviction and experience to take on this moment, and I look forward to working with them.”

“Mattie Scott has been a courageous mother, gun violence advocate, and Western Addition community leader for decades,” said District 5 Supervisor Bilal Mahmood. “I’m confident her unique experience and perspective will benefit the work of the Police Commission.”

Mattie Scott is a 23-year veteran in the fields of violence prevention, gun violence survivorship, and activism. She is the founder and executive director of Healing 4 Our Families & Our Nation as well as the president of the San Francisco chapter of Mothers-in-Charge and San Francisco Brady California State. Her work has included outreach with the incarcerated and formerly incarcerated, collaboration with No More Tears at San Quentin Prison, and engagement with youth, families, and faith-based communities across California. Mattie has served on multiple boards, including the San Francisco Chief of Police African American Police Advisory Board and the Westside Community Services Advisory Board. She is also the board president of Freedom West Housing Corporation. A dedicated mother, she has devoted her life to violence prevention, intervention, and educational awareness. Mattie is driven by the tragic losses of her son, nephew, and niece — each taken too soon by violence or tragedy.

Wilson Leung is a former federal prosecutor and experienced trial lawyer with significant experience in litigation. Prior to this appointment, Leung served as Director of Investigations and Integrity at Intel, Director of Government and Regulatory Investigations and Litigation at Uber, and Global Ethics and Investigations Manager at HP. He is a San Francisco native and graduate of U.C. Berkeley, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in political science. He went on to graduate from Columbia Law School, where he earned his J.D. Having previously spent over 14 years at the Department of Justice as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Leung brings a wealth of experience in compliance and oversight, both of which will serve as an asset to the city’s Police Commission.
