A San Francisco master painter talks shop, a Black novelist brings her debut to MoAD, and most of the weekend costs you nothing
The fog’s thinking about leaving and the city’s got plenty going on. Here’s where to be this week.
Wednesday, Oct. 21: A Murder in 1920s Oklahoma
Nafissa Thompson-Spires made her name with Heads of the Colored People. Now she has a novel. The Four Wives and Five Deaths of Richard Milford is set in 1920s Oklahoma, where a moonshiner who couldn’t keep to one woman turns up dead and his four “wives” are the top suspects. She’ll be in conversation with novelist Margaret Wilkerson Sexton at the Museum of the African Diaspora, presented with Litquake.
MoAD, 685 Mission St., San Francisco. 6 to 7:30 p.m., doors at 5:30. Free, $10 to $15 suggested donation.
Thursday, Oct. 22: Dewey Crumpler, in His Own Words
Dewey Crumpler has been making art in San Francisco for more than 50 years, and MoAD finally gave him the room to show it. Dewey Crumpler: Sonic Lineages is the museum’s fall retrospective, with paintings from across his career and new kinetic works made for the show. It runs through May 2027, so there’s no excuse.
Thursday you can hear from the man himself. MoAD and AIA San Francisco bring Crumpler to their Makers Series.
Center for Architecture & Design, 140 Sutter St., San Francisco. 5:30 to 8 p.m. Details at moadsf.org.
While you’re at MoAD, the fall season also includes Dorian Reid’s Calling All Cats!, ceramics and protest ephemera tied to her family’s connection to the Black Panthers, and Tahirah Rasheed’s The Light We Carry Forward, glass, print and photography on Black womanhood, rest and care.
